GWT in Practice review by Petteri Hietavirta
Selecting the next book to review was easy. I have been using GWT for couple months but without any printed reference material. Therefore, I was eager to read the book through.
The book provides enough information to understand how GWT works but it is not a beginner's book. First chapters provide introduction and overview but following chapters are then more specific in explaining typical uses of GWT with other technologies like SOAP, JSON and Maven. Therefore, book's main value comes with numerous examples and discussion on how to solve various problems. Examples use GWT version 1.4 but mentions some expected features of 1.5 and how developer using GWT would benefit from them.
GWT in Practice is not meant to be read in a one session as it is more suitable for problem solving or guidance for specific tasks within implementation of GWT based application. Some of the examples feature 3rd party libraries as a part of the solution so the book is not pure GWT in this sense. Naturally book cannot cover all situations but in my opinion it is valuable addition to developers' book collection.
